Bobby Lee Vance of Mahan Ave., Stanaford, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2011, at the Summers County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale, W.Va. He was in his 77th year, and was the son of the late Jack and Lola Adkins Vance and was born on February 12, 1935, at Glade, W.Va.
Bobby grew up in Glade and lived in McCreery and Terry, before moving to Stanaford in 1991.
In his early twenties, Bobby worked in the coal mines and cut and sold mining timbers before starting Bobby Vance Tree Service. He was the owner and operator of the business until his illness in 2008. Bobby was responsible for teaching many men the art of tree trimming, climbing, and timbering, some of which have businesses in the area today.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Bill and Frankie Vance, and sisters Betty Vance Scott, and June Vance Harrah. He was also preceded in death on March 17, 2011, by his best friend and longtime companion Margie Clay.
He is survived by brothers, Buddy and Okey Vance, and sisters Ruby Edwards, Gladys Sullivan, and Helen Woods, and several nieces and nephews. For the last 48 years Bobby has been like a father to Robert, Gary, and Roscoe Clay, Joan Gray, Brenda Alderman, Kathy Adkins, Earleen Jennings, and also Anna Clay with whom he and Margie made their home. He was pawpaw to many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and will always be the father he did not have to be. He will be sadly missed.
Bobby was a member of the Terry Independent Christian Church, where he attended faithfully until his illness.
Funeral services will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel on Friday, December 9, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Gene Snuffer officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.
A visitation for the family will be from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., with friends visiting from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Friends and family members will serve as pallbearers.
