Anthem Walker

Anthem Walker, age 97, of Beckley, WV passed away Friday, September 19, 2025 at her residence.

Our Mom was the baby of 12, she is the last surviving member of her immediate family, she was born in Brounland WV, raised her children on Bearhole Road now called Twin Falls Road. Her Mother passed away when she was four. She thought of her older sister Ella more as a mother than a sister.

Mom loved spending time with her family, she loved beating her grandchildren at UNO and SKIP-BO. They would tease her and tell her she was cheating, she really was that good even into her late 80's.

Mom was a life long member of The Church of the Nazarene! She loved gardening, cooking, and canning. You never left her house with an empty stomach. She always had a goodie drawer for the grands. She loved fried potatoes, pinto beans, cornbread and buttered grits.

For the past thirteen years mom and Danny had a daytime caregiver (Tiffany), who took care of them.

If you would like to do anything for mom, give your life to Jesus, she'll know. That was always the prayer for her family. We all set back and think, what a reunion she is having. Heaven…a place she has looked forward to all her life was made a reality on Friday morning, Sept 19, 2025. She closed her eyes at home and opened them in her new home where Jesus met her with arms wide open and said, "Welcome home my good and faithful servant."

Mom raised six children, Janie, Jimmy, Jerry, Marsha, Mary and Danny. Those left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Mary Walker Bortell of MacArthur, WV, Marsha Walker Colo (Steve) whom she lovingly called papaw of Beckley WV and Danny Walker of the home and her faithful pet "Georgie" who was always by her side and special granddaughters, Mary Elson and Betty Howard (Jim) of Ohio, and a host of nieces and nephews. She had thirteen grandchildren, Debbie Kinder, Mary Elson, Betty Howard, Jimmy Walker, Jerry Walker, Joyce Miller, Joe Walker, Justin Miller, Steven Colo, Kevin Colo, Dustin Colo, Rock Bortell and Remmy Bortell. She had 21 great grandchildren, Cody Endlich , Ashley Endlich, Josh Endlich , Brandon Carpenter, James Carpenter, Jared Howard , Tasha Hunter, Jessica Miller, Leslie Miller, Korey Tedder, Gaige Colo, Tristan Colo, Jordan Stevenson, Kaylee Colo, Ella Colo, Elijah Colo, Alyssa Colo, Drake Colo, Liliana Colo, Remmy Bortell and Resa Bortell and 19 great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James White Walker, their sons, Jerry Walker, Jimmy Walker and their daughter Janie Taylor, sons-in-law, William Taylor and Mark Bortell, six grandchildren, one great grandchild and four great great grandchildren. Parents William Riley and Vallie Ora (Kirk) Hager, siblings, Edith Hager Holstein, Ella Hager Claypool, Eva Hager Rutski, Ted, Clark, Jesse, Frank, Daniel, Randolph, Jack and Mike Hager.
