George Vernon Adkins

George Vernon Adkins, age 75, of Pierpoint, WV went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the Bowers Hospice House after a long illness.

Born on January 10, 1948, he was the son of the late Rev. Dallas Carlton Adkins and Merendie Chaffin Adkins.

George was a member of the Pierpoint Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as the adult Sunday School teacher and sang in the quartet and the church choir until his illness prevented him from doing so.

Mr. Adkins was a 1965 graduate of Mullens High School. He was employed by Norfolk Southern Railroad for 31 years. After his retirement, he was a taxi driver for Cimarron Taxi Service, and was employed by Leisure Lanes Bowling Alley where he made many friends.

In his spare time he enjoyed reading and studying his Bible, listening to and singing gospel music, and spending time with his family and grandchildren who he loved very much. He loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. He was an avid sports fan, and loved to bowl more than anything.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Ray Adkins; a sister, Barbara Adkins Phillips; an infant son John Vernon Adkins; and a daughter Alicia Faye Adkins.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife and caretaker, Dorothy J. Adkins, with whom he would have celebrated 50 glorious years on March 1, daughters Lora Lynn Smith and husband Howard of Mebane, NC, Amie Leigh England and her husband Nathan of Mullens, and a son Christian Douglas Adkins. A brother, William Carlton Adkins and wife Wendy of PA, and sister-in-law, Michelle Adkins of Dublin, VA. Six grandchildren, Luke Vandall and wife Shannon, Ryan Vandall and wife Madison, Nate England, Allison Hoosier and husband Eric,  Ethan Cox, and Olivia Cox. 3 great-grandchildren, Winston, Evelyn, and Owen Vandall. A very dear friend, Dave Swazie, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, WV on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 2pm with the Rev. Charles "Butch" Acord officiating.
