Gerald “Buck” Edward Abshire

Gerald Edward (Buck) Abshire, age 73, of Beckley, WV walked into the arms of Jesus on December 23, 2025, after a long illness.

He was born on January 24, 1952, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of the late Ezelle Lawrence and Celia Ramona (Tyree) Abshire.

Buck was a hard worker. He started working at a young age delivering newspapers in Spring Hill, South Charleston. He worked as a longshoreman on the Great Lakes after high school and at Dulles Airport in Virginia. He returned to West Virginia and worked as a coal miner for 21 years until the mines closed. He became a cross-country truck driver and drove for 16 years and became a trainer, he achieved recognition several times for driving one-million miles with no accidents.

Buck was a man of grace with a quiet demeanor and was loved by many for his loving ways.

He never complained, even once, when his health declined and he was diagnosed with cancer, had two strokes, and an amputation of his right lower leg. He remained strong and graceful. He never lost his sense of humor.

Before his illness, he loved hiking for miles, hunting ginseng, fishing, and camping. He was a nature lover and loved planting his gardens and flowers. He loved every flower he saw. He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and professed his faith. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved niece Kelli Abshire.

Buck is survived by his devoted wife Rhonda (Horton) Abshire, loving sons Gerald Abshire Jr. of Maple Fork and Timothy Abshire of Pax, bonus children William (Bill) Cook (Ashley) of Fitzpatrick, Kelli Stevens (Keith) of Daniels, grandchildren Joshua Morton of Oak hill, Luke Abshire of Conway, SC., bonus grandchildren Whitney Roberts (Donald) of Huntington, Maniya Stevens of Daniels (who he loved like a daughter), Cayden Stevens of Daniels (his little "shadow" who held a very special place in his heart ), loving siblings: brothers Stan Abshire (Carla) of Sissonville, Stephen Abshire of Beckley, David Abshire (Mary) Mount Hope, sister Pam Hall (Larry) of Ripley WV, beloved sisters-in law Rita Duncan of Coal City and Eva Cook of Beaver, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Reverend Kenneth Lambert and his wife Tammy for their love and prayers over the years, and Kelli Stevens, Maniya Stevens, Bill Cook, Rita Duncan, and Eva Cook for their love and much needed assistance during Bucks chronic illness. It was greatly appreciated.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 2pm at the Amos E. Quesenberry Peace Chapel of Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Beckley, WV with Reverend Kenneth Lambert officiating. Friends may visit with family from 12pm until service time. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are William Cook, Darrell Spence, James Wills, Caleb Mullens, Lee Adkins, and Levi Pugh.

Bonus granddaughters: Maniya and Cayden Stevens will serve as flower girls.
