Harold "Gene" Atkinson, Sr.
Harold Eugene "Gene" Atkinson Sr., age 81 of Old Crow Road, Beaver, passed away at the Beckley VA Medical Center on Monday April 2, 2012, following a long illness.
Born on September 12, 1930, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Harry B. Atkinson Sr. and Lillian Pearl Lilly Atkinson.
He was a 1949 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He attended Beckley College as well as Centenary College of Louisiana.
Mr. Atkinson was a disabled owner and operator of Atkinson Cleaning Service, and was the former co-owner and operator of Atkinson Supermarket in Sophia. He was a lifelong member of the Beckley Regular Baptist Church, where he had formerly served as a deacon.
Mr. Atkinson was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, having been a nuclear weapons specialist.
He enjoyed fishing, WVU Sports and "spending time on his porch."
Mr. Atkinson was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. John Atkinson, and by two sisters, Mary Barney and Faith Barker.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 57 years, Phyllis Wiley Atkinson. Three children, Hal Atkinson and his wife Jane of Beckley, Paul Atkinson and his wife Elizabeth of King George, Va., and Melinda Martin and her husband Ed of Asheville, NC; a brother, H. Beuran Atkinson and his wife Jane Ann of Beckley, and three sisters, Hope Atkinson of Beckley, Charity Fondale of Beckley, and Martha Muntz and her husband Jack of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren, Katrina Dobroski and her husband Mike, Greg Atkinson and his wife Angela, Harold "Buddy" Martin and his wife Nikki, Emmy Lou Atkinson, and Jacob Atkinson; a great-grandchild Brennen Atkinson, and many nieces and nephew also survives.
Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of "Gene" Atkinson at the Beckley Regular Baptist Church on Saturday April 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Steve Beverly officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.
Friends may call on Friday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley from 6 to 9 p.m., and also at the church one hour prior to the services.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
