Homer "Ted" Hackney

Homer "Ted" Hackney, age 91, passed away peacefully at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

Born on July 13, 1934 in Clendenin, WV, Ted grew up with a love for sports, including basketball, football, and track. He went on to play basketball at Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV, often crediting his long life to his years as an athlete.

In 1955, Ted enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving proudly as a medic in Korea during the Korean War until 1957. Upon returning home, he married the love of his life, Judith Powers. Together, Ted and Judy shared sixty-four years surrounded by family and traveling with friends.

Ted had a long career in the car industry, even owning and operating his own dealership in Maysville, KY for many years. After retiring, he enjoyed playing golf and watching his favorite sports. He always had such a sweet tooth and never passed up dessert, especially his favorite Giant Eagle cake. Above all, Ted was most proud of his children and grandchildren for all their accomplishments.

Ted was preceded in death by his wife Judy, her parents Jack and Beulah Powers, and his beloved grandson, Luke Krawchyk.

Ted leaves behind his loving daughters, Diane Hackney, Leigh Krawchyk, and Sandi (Greg) Shamblin; grandchildren, Brittany Lilly, Logan (Melissa) Krawchyk, Amber (Chris) Vergos, Lauren Krawchyk, Jacob Shamblin, Dirk (Hannah) Shamblin, and Taylor Shamblin; one great-grandson, Declan, whose photos Ted proudly shared with anyone he met; and three step-great-grandchildren Liberty, Kennedy, and Savannah.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Beckley VA Hospital and caregivers for the compassionate care and steadfast support they provided to Ted over the years.

In keeping with Ted's wishes, no services will be held. Friends and family are invited to honor his memory by supporting a local animal shelter, reflecting his lifelong love for dogs. Donations may be made to the Humane Society of Raleigh County ( www.hsrcwv.org )
