Honoring a Life of Service, Dedication, and Love

Staff Sergeant Hubert R. Cooper, 84, of Hico, WV, [formerly Beaver, WV], passed away at the Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital on March 20, 2026.

Born January 11, 1942, in Lego, WV, he was the son of Edward and Opal Cooper and the husband of the late Edna Ford Cooper.

He entered military service on August 9, 1965, beginning a distinguished career in the United States Air Force that would span over 22 years as an aircraft mechanic.

Through dedication and skill, he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-5), earning the respect of his peers and superiors alike. During his service, he was assigned to the SOG-106 7th Air Force and served overseas during the Vietnam-era conflict, supporting tactical and special operations. He was proud of his service and traveling the world on behalf of the US Air Force. He was recognized with numerous awards and decorations, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with multiple oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award, reflecting his years of faithful and honorable service.

He was a member of the Sunday Road Baptist Church, Hico, WV.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, siblings Curtis Cooper, Marlene Watson, Leon Cooper, Loretta Lilly, and Margarette Thompson.

He is survived by his sister, Louise Hertzog, and brothers David Cooper, Kenneth Cooper, Larry Cooper, Roger Cooper, and many nieces and nephews. And a special niece, Courtney Cooper Bennett.

He will be remembered for his service to his country, dedication to his craft, and his love for his family. His legacy of honor and commitment will endure in the lives of those who knew him.

Anyone wishing to attend can join the family at a graveside service to be held at the Cooper Family Cemetery in Odd, WV, Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. Reverend Dr. Larry Watson officiating. Family and friends will be pallbearers. Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard will be conducting the military honors.

The family extends their sincere gratitude for the care, compassion, and camaraderie provided by the staff and fellow veterans at the Beckley VA Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Beckley VA Hospital in his name.
