J.C. Shumate

J.C. Shumate, age 77, of Coal City, WV passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025 at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston, WV.

Born on March 27, 1948 in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Charlie Shumate and Helen Sparks Shumate.

Mr. Shumate was the retired owner and operator of J.C. Shumate Drilling, and enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing. He was an avid history buff, but most of all, he loved the work he did with his drilling business. Mr. Shumate was a member of the West Virginia Water Well Drilling Association, where he had served as secretary in the early 1980's.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Sue Church Shumate; a sister Debra Ford.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Jill Shumate, DDS of Beckley; a sister, Charlene Perdue of Michigan; a brother, Lewis Shumate of Shady Spring; a special nephew, Danny Reed of Philadelphia, PA. Many other extended family members and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, WV on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Keith Manning officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.
