Johnny Paskel Dodson, 87, of Oak Hill, WV—a devoted husband, father, brother, and beloved "Papaw"—went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Born on January 31, 1938, Johnny was proud of his roots in Kingston, WV. He was the son of Joe Elmer Dodson, Sr. and Nola May Caudill Dodson.
A hard-working man, Johnny retired from Mclouth Steel after a long career marked by dedication and integrity. He lived a full life defined by his love for family, his servant heart, and his deep sense of responsibility. Johnny embodied what it meant to be a cornerstone—he understood what it meant to build and be a foundation that others could depend on, a steady presence that held everything and everyone together with devotion and unwavering love. He always made sure his children, grandchildren, and neighbors had what they needed. Whether he was lending a helping hand, bringing peppers from his garden, or pulling the trash can down to the road on his way out, he found joy in taking care of others. He was reliable at any hour, early to everything, and never missed an opportunity to share a story. His familiar parting words, "I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck," will echo in the hearts of those who loved him.
Johnny's idea of a perfect day was simple: a Sudoku puzzle, a few shortbread cookies, going for a ride, and time spent with his wife, Patty. His family will miss his phone calls with words of wisdom and his visits to check in. But more than anything, his children are endlessly grateful to have had him as a father. His legacy will live on in the lessons he taught, the memories they will cherish, and the love that they will forever hold in their hearts.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 26 years, Patricia Dodson, and his brother Joe Elmer Dodson, Jr. and sisters, Freda Dodson Lyons and Frances Dodson Riner.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters: Kiley Price (Mike), Becky Ferrell (Shan), Mary McCoy (Tim), and Laura Shore (Dean); his sons: Todd Dodson (Justen), Craig Ortiz (Donna), Ray Ortiz (Cheryl), Herb Meador III, and Marty Dodson (Debbie); along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved deeply as well as his brother by heart, Bill Neely.
In accordance with his personal wishes, there will be no visitation or formal services.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to New River Animal Rescue nrhswv.networkforgood.com
