Karen Elizabeth Mckinney

Karen Elizabeth McKinney, of Midway, entered her heavenly home on July 29, 2025, following complications from a massive stroke.

She was the daughter of the late Doris and Jerry King, and sister of the late Craig Stephen King. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Danny McKinney.

Karen worked for many years with Raleigh County Schools as a cook at several schools, spending the longest stretch of her career at Independence High School. Later, she became a teacher's aide and, even after retirement, continued serving students and staff as a substitute—remaining faithful to her work and her school family until the time of her passing.

She enjoyed music, dancing, and the occasional visit to play video lottery games, as well as sharing a good cup of coffee and conversation at the café. Karen had a deep love for her dogs—Scooter, Odie, and Petey—whom she affectionately called her boys. They were never "just pets," but beloved family members.

While Karen loved many things in this life, her greatest love was her faith. She lived with quiet devotion to God, often showing her care and compassion through simple acts of kindness. Those who knew her take comfort in knowing that she has gone home to walk with her Savior, Jesus, in heaven—joyfully reunited with her boys and her lost family.

Karen is survived by her son, John R. Greenwald, and his wife, Heather, of MacArthur; her longtime friend, Gloria Obugene, whom she affectionately called her little sister; three step-grandsons; two great step-granddaughters; and many other relatives and friends who will miss her steady presence, humor, and kindness—especially her work family at Independence High School.

She will be remembered for her straightforward nature, strong work ethic, unwavering faith, and quiet devotion to the people and animals she loved.
