Mary Ann Canterbury

Mary Ann Canterbury, age 84, of Lexington, South Carolina passed into glory surrounded by family on May 3, 2026 after a long illness.

Born on August 28, 1941, in Mount Hope, West Virginia she was the daughter of the late John Cecil Williams and Nona (Yancey) Williams.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children Becky Cook, Ruth Ann Lopez (Charles), Lisa Murdock (Timothy), adopted son Jeremy Richmond (Melissa); a daughter-in-law Janie Canterbury, grandchildren Mark Canterbury Jr. (Brandi), April Canterbury, Robert Hollandsworth II (Meri), Mintie Pritchard (Bill), Jayme Ferguson (Camryn), James "Sparky" Sparks II (Karen), Kaylin Nesst (Chris), Ryan Lilly, Taylor Murdock, Lance Richmond, Alexus Richmond; and a whole host of great-grandchildren, friends and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her husband and childhood sweetheart Dayton Canterbury; son Mark Canterbury; siblings Charles "Sonny" Williams, Helen Powers, Betty Emerson, Joyce "Peggy" Ruff, Benjamin "Benny" Cecil Williams.

She lived the majority of her life on Maple Fork Road in Mount Hope, West Virginia. During her life she worked as a dry cleaner, glass blower, and was a school bus monitor with her husband, Dayton. The job that was the most important to her and brought her the most joy was being a homemaker, raising her children, and being "Nanny" to her many grandchildren. She enjoyed quilting, watching game shows and shopping. She loved keeping a tidy house and decorating but what she will be remembered for the most is her love. She loved cooking big family dinners and relished the togetherness of these gatherings where she often served the best peanut butter fudge you could find.

Mary Ann's kindness was a beacon of light in the lives of everyone she met, leaving behind a legacy of love and joy. She cared deeply for everyone around her and would give someone her last dollar or the shirt off of her back. She never wanted anyone to go hungry and always made sure people were fed. She was often light-hearted and funny, always making people smile with her jokes. She loved picking on her sons-in-law; she had a running joke where she would tell Tim he was her favorite while she was in West Virginia and then would tell Charles he was her favorite if she was in South Carolina or Florida. She spent the last few years of her life with her daughter Ruth Ann and son-in-law Charles in Panama City, Florida, then Lexington, South Carolina. She loved her daily bologna sandwiches, but only if Ruth Ann made them because she said no one could make them like her.

She was a devoted follower of Christ and member of the Beckley Church of God. She loved her pastor and the congregation. She often gave testimony about being healed from breast cancer, always giving God the glory for her healing journey.

Funeral services will be conducted at Beckley Church of God on Monday, May 11, 2026 at 2:00 p.m., with  Pastor Harold Newsome officiating. Family viewing from 12 - 1 p.m., Friends may visit from 1-2 p.m., with burial service following at the Williams Cemetery on Maple Fork Road in Mount Hope, WV.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Lilly, Lance Richmond, Jayme Ferguson, James Sparks II, Robert Hollandsworth II and Chris Nesst.
