Matthew Robert Nichols, 56, of Coal City went to be with Jesus on Friday, July 19, 2024, surrounded by his family following a sudden illness.
He was the son of Leonard Robert Nichols and the late Patricia Kay Leach Nichols of Smithers, WV.
Matt was an outdoorsman, and loved hunting, fishing, ATV riding, gardening, and taking care of his beautiful land. He cherished his family and poured out his love and care every hour of every day. His grandchildren were the light of his life. He lived and breathed for them. He had a deep and personal love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus, in which he applied to everything he done. He was a jack of all trades, and it was known that "If Matt can't fix it, nobody can." Some called him "MacGyver." In his younger years, Matt enlisted into the National Guard where he was deployed to Honduras to help build roads, and was then stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for the U.S. Army. He was a mechanic for many years where he worked for several area car lots. Later in life, he went on to become a master HVAC technician, where he worked for over 20 years with not only his boss, but his lifelong friend Joe Argabrite and wife Liz for Airtemp Heating and Cooling in Beckley, WV.
Matt was a mentor and father figure to many children throughout his years. He coached football for Coal City Colts youth league for 3 years. He always opened his heart, mind, knowledge and skills whether it be for a lifelong friend or a stranger in need. He was quick to help those in need, never expecting anything in return, and his impact on the lives he touched was profound.
Those left to cherish his memory include, his soulmate and the love of his life of 36 years, Jennifer Jo Nichols of Coal City, his daughter, Ashley Jewell Herron and husband Anthony of Coal City, WV, his son, Justin Robert Nichols and wife, Beth, of Midway, WV. 5 special grandchildren, McKenzie, Noah, Hannah, Willow and Raiden. His father Leonard Nichols of Smithers, WV, Brother Greg Nichols and wife Jennifer of Boomer, WV, Sister Shannon Sears and husband Dan of Mt. Olive, WV, Several nieces and nephews along with many other family members that were near and dear to his heart. He also leaves behind his dog Snoopy (aka Snoop Dog) with whom he had a love-hate relationship with.
Matt was preceded in death by his mother Patricia Kay Nichols, paternal grandparents Sam Jerry Nichols Sr, and Alice Mae Keatley Nichols, maternal grandparents Fermon Edmond Leach Sr and Mabel Lilly Jackson Leach, and brother-in-law and good friend Randall Wayne Lilly who passed in March of this year.
The family would like to give special thanks to Pastor Ken Souder, Elder Stanley Chafin, Steve Robinette, and Sandbranch worship center, along with the whole Argabrite family for their love and support during this time.
A celebration of life will be held at North Sandbranch Worship Center (801 North Sandbranch Rd. Mount Hope, WV) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 with visitation from 5-7pm with services to follow at 7pm with Pastor Ken Souder officiating along with Elder Stanley Chafin and Steve Robinette.
