Dr. Mohammad Sobhan

Dr. Mohammad Sobhan, age 83, passed away on January 23, 2026, in Beckley, West Virginia.

He was born in a rural village in the Natore district in northern Bangladesh on April 26, 1943, to Serajuddin Mollah and Rabeya Begum.  He completed his medical training in Dhaka University and moved to the United States in 1975 following a period of atrocities and widespread violence preceding the independence of Bangladesh.  For over 50 years, he dedicated his life to practicing family medicine to underserved, rural Americans first in Rainelle, WV and then Oak Hill, WV before settling in Beckley, WV.  Additionally, Dr. Sobhan served honorably as a physician in the United States Army Reserve for 13 years.

He was married to Mahua Hoque, and together they had five children, Shiblee Sobhan (d., Jan 11, 2007), Sabera Sobhan-Mosley, Shabana O'Brien, Shakur Sobhan, and Sabur Sobhan.  He was also a proud 'nana' to five incredible grandsons, Jaylen O'Brien, Zaide O'Brien, Naiym O'Brien, Sebastian Mosley, and Julian Mosley.

He was an avid reader and especially loved astronomy, science, geography, and history. He relished talking about these beloved subjects and would enthrall any lucky listener in overly detailed responses to simple questions. He had a keen interest in photography and maintained an impressive collection of classic cameras. This passion resulted in a treasure trove of sweet memories for which his surviving family is deeply grateful.

He believed strongly in supporting extended family members with the opportunities that come with education. He generously supported 10 people in Bangladesh in obtaining advanced professional degrees in education, law, the humanities, and engineering. He also sponsored several family members in their pursuit of the American dream. If the measure of a man is the positive impact we have on our friends, family, and community, then Dr. Sobhan can be proud of having lived a particularly successful life.

Funeral services occurred on January 24, 2026, at the Beckley Mosque and he was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, surrounded by the love of his family, friends and colleagues.
