Nancy Camper

Nancy Jo Meadows Camper passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Nancy was born on June 4, 1936, in Beckley, WV, to the late Wilda Eunice Craghead Meadows and Earnest Ray Meadows.

Nancy was a graduate of the 1954 class of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Beckley College before starting work at Beckley Manufacturing. She later hired on with C&P Telephone as an operator and later moved into the construction office as dispatcher and later became secretary to the plant manager before resigning to have a family.

Nancy married her long-time sweetheart, Tom Camper, and settled in Beckley and later Cool Ridge.

Nancy was a wonderful and devoted mother and wife. She had a strong faith in the lord, loved her family, and was such a positive role model and inspiration to her children. Nancy had a great personality, loved to cook, work in her flower garden, especially her Hydrangeas, loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed reading history, especially about Thomas Jefferson. There was always a flower catalog and a Southern Living magazine close by.

She made the house a home. She was such a pleasure to be with and made her family's life wonderful. Nancy enjoyed the holidays and would make sure the house was decorated and ready for family. Nancy would plan out the meals for all holidays well in advance to make sure we had our favorites. She was creative so she was always looking for new recipes to make for us that would quickly become our new favorites. Mom especially planned out a nice meal for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.  Any visitor, any time of the year, would be welcomed by something good to eat.

Nancy loved her children and was their number one advocate. She took special joy in being a mother. She stressed the importance of education, helped with homework if needed, made sure the clothes were clean and ironed and kept the house going and full of love. Nancy and her husband were a good team and were role models to their children demonstrating integrity, generosity, empathy and honesty to their children while instilling the need to work hard, learn everything they could and plan…her children owe their successes to her loving devotion to them. Her children love her, will miss her dearly and will one day see her again.

Nancy was also a devoted wife and was a wonderful partner to her husband, built a life together and she took good care of him when he got sick late in life and with whom she is now reunited.

Nancy is survived by her two children, Thomas Dale Camper, Jr. of Lynchburg, VA. and Tara Dawn Camper of Cool Ridge, WV.  Nancy is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, and two sisters, Hazel Manning and Margaret Meadows.
