Nicholas Adam Mariano

Nicholas Adam Mariano, 47, of Beckley, W.Va., passed away on September 30, 2024, after a battle with cancer.

Although he had lived in West Virginia for over a decade at the time of his passing, he was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and was a "Bawlmer" man at heart.

When he wasn't working as a local cable guy, he would enjoy his favorite past-times – cheering for his favorite teams, the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles, debating politics with his friends, and traveling.

He was a proud member of CWA Local 2007 and strongly believed in workers' rights and equality for all.

He could be the loudest person in the room, but had a quiet, gentle heart. He gave excellent advice and wasn't one to back down when he knew he was right.

He had a quirky sense of humor. He often joked that he was becoming an old man and that all the kids today are wearing Nirvana shirts, even though that was a band from his generation. Plus, they needed to get off his lawn. However, he was quick to help anyone who needed it, and would have done anything for the people around him.

While he thought he was old, he was far too young to leave this world.

He was a loving father to his adorable six-year-old daughter, Winnie, who was the light of his life. She gave him the reason to start telling "dad jokes."

His advice to everyone would be to stand up for others when they are being mistreated, don't ever follow a person just because they claim to be the leader, question everything a person in power tells you, and to stop worrying so much. Life is short.

Nick was preceded in death by his "pops" George Miller of Catonsville, Md.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter and his wife, Autumn Shelton, of Beckley; his mother, Debra Smith-Miller of Catonsville, MD; his brothers and sisters, Gary and Phyllis Shelton of Rupert, W.Va, Josh and Mary-Lynn Butcher of Marmet, W.Va., and Johna Pell of Boomer, W.Va.; and numerous friends and extended family.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
