Obituary

Phyllis Jean “PJ” Moore Pennington, 76, of Beaver, West Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at her home, surrounded by those who loved her dearly. Though her passing leaves an immeasurable emptiness in the hearts of her family and friends, there is great comfort in knowing that she is now in the presence of her Lord, free from pain and sorrow, and reunited with those who went before her.

Phyllis was born on February 8, 1950, to the late Joseph Carl Moore and Gladys Kinder Moore. She was a woman of deep faith whose love for the Lord was woven throughout her life. She trusted in God through both the joys and trials of her journey, and her family finds peace in knowing that her earthly journey has ended, but her eternal life has just begun.

Phyllis was a loving mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend. She possessed a strength and resilience that carried her through the many seasons of her life. To those who knew and loved her, she was a source of love, encouragement, laughter, and unwavering support. Her family will forever treasure the memories made with her and the lasting imprint she left on their hearts.

Phyllis began her career as a hairdresser, where she enjoyed serving and connecting with others. Later, she found a profession she truly loved when she became a school bus driver for Raleigh County. She took great pride in her work and loved the children she transported, becoming a familiar and caring presence in the lives of many.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, N.A. Pennington; her step-son, Barry Pennington; and her siblings, Thelma Woodrum, William “Harry” Moore, Charles Moore, Beulah King, James Moore, Anna Hensley, Joseph Moore, Jr., and Thomas “Tom” Moore.

Those left to cherish and honor her memory include her daughter, Tara Lynn Davis of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia; step-son, Nick Pennington and wife Penny of Roxbury, North Carolina; step-daughter, Johanna Havens and husband Brad of Bland, Virginia; and her grandchildren, Kaegan Young, Nicholas Pennington, Joey Pennington, Braxdyn Havens, and Reazyn Havens.

For her family, Phyllis was so much more than a mother. She was a beloved mother and grandmother, a confidante, a source of strength, and a best friend. Her daughter will forever be grateful to God for the precious gift of being able to walk beside her through the final chapter of her earthly journey. Though there was a deep desire to take away her pain and keep her here, there is now peace in surrendering her to the One who loved her first and loves her eternally.

Her family takes comfort in the promises of Scripture and in the assurance that “to be absent from the body” is “to be present with the Lord.” They rejoice that she has finished her earthly race, kept the faith, and has now received the eternal reward promised to those who belong to Christ.

While tears will undoubtedly be shed and her absence will be deeply felt, her loved ones choose to celebrate her life and rejoice in her homegoing. The same God who carried Phyllis throughout her life carried her safely home. Her earthly voice may now be quiet, but the love she gave, the faith she lived, and the memories she created will continue to speak for generations to come.

Until we meet again, Mom. We love you, and we will see you on the other side.
