Retha Belle Hogan Merritt, age 85, of Scott Depot, WV, formerly of Crow, WV, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2026, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.
Born on July 6, 1940, in Raleigh, WV, she was the daughter of the late Toy Q. Meadows and Goldie Yost Meadows.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 21 years, William Boyd Hogan of Crow, WV; second husband of 19 years, Charles (Chuck) Edward Merritt of Beckley, WV; sister Greta Mae Wood of Beaver, WV; mother-in-law and father-in-law Hazel and William Hogan; sisters-in-law Melba Pittman, Betty Crawford, and Sara Crum; and brothers-in-law Ted Hogan and Charles Hogan.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her two daughters, Lynn Hogan Meadows and her husband, Jon, of Hurricane, WV and Mindy Hogan-Charles and her husband, Brian, of Auburndale, FL; sister Jeanette Mays and her husband, Robert Mays, of Beaver, WV; and four step-grandchildren: Brooke Charles of Boca Raton, FL, Bill Merritt and his wife, Francy, of Mira Loma, CA; Megan Merritt Tarver and her husband of ID; and Michael Merritt and his wife, Christina, of Spokane Valley, WA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Merritt was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and was a former employee of the Bank of Raleigh (now City National Bank) as a bookkeeper. She was a hardworking, strong, and loyal woman devoted to her family. For many years, Mrs. Merritt was an active member of the Grandview Christian Church in Grandview, WV. She enjoyed volunteering in various leadership roles at church, as a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader, in the Shady Spring District Woman's Club, and as an active parent in her daughters' school and community activities. After her retirement from banking, she enjoyed traveling with her husband Chuck, visiting 32 countries.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Grandview Christian Church, 185 Table Rock Road, Beaver, WV, on Monday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jordan Legg officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit the family one hour before the service.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Southern WV, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802 in memory of Retha Hogan Merritt.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern West Virginia and the dedicated and compassionate staff members at Bowers Hospice House and Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home for their excellent care.
