Robert N. Crotty, 88, of Shady Spring, WV, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024 following a short illness.
Robert was born April 30, 1935, at home in Pluto, WV, where he was raised on a full working farm and learned the value of hard work and discipline, graduating from Shady Spring High School in 1952.
Mr. Crotty served his country as a member of the National Guard. He owned and operated a coal truck while he attended WV Tech, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a manager for Beckley Manufacturing for several years before he started his career as a Federal Mine Inspector, a job he loved for over 40 years until he retired in the early 2000's. He continued cattle farming into retirement, winning awards for conservation and soil management. Robert served as a board member for several agriculture agencies, including being elected to the Raleigh County FSA Committee and Southern States.
He married Myra Ball in 1962 and they were married for 41 years before her passing in 2003.
Robert's hobbies included riding his Harley Davidson, watching NASCAR every Sunday, and rooting for the WV Mountaineers and the NY Yankees. He raised a strong, independent daughter, Kara Crotty Riffe, in whom he instilled the value of faith, family, and hard work. They shared a special bond over their love of sports cars. They traveled together to see Yankee stadium, the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and NASCAR Hall of fame. He loved reading the newspaper and enjoying a hot cup of coffee every morning. He could fix anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Robert was an active member of Shady Spring First Baptist Church for more than 40 years prior to COVID where he served in many capacities.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Freda Crotty, Brother-in-law, David Lilly, nephew Justin Lilly, and sister-in-law and husband Myrna and Bill Painter.
He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in- law Kara Crotty Riffe and Jon Riffe of Daniels, grandsons, Jared Riffe of Beaver, WV and Ryan Riffe of Fairmont, WV, whom he adored, and sister, Barbara Crotty Lilly of Daniels.
