Roger Lee Johnson, age 85, of Crow, WV, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026 at Bowers Hospice House.
He was born on May 12, 1940 to Guy and Fern (Morris) Johnson of Crow.
He lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and deep devotion to his family. He was known by many names to those who knew and loved him including Dad, Grumpy, and DoDa.
Roger served in the US Army, serving time in Berlin, Germany during the wall construction. Over his lifetime he became a skilled carpenter and electrician. Roger was known for being handy at building and fixing almost anything. If something was broken, he could usually figure it out. Friends, neighbors, and family often turned to him for help, knowing he would approach every task with competence, determination and creativity.
Roger shared 62 loving years of marriage with his devoted wife, Jean (Lind) Johnson. Together they built a strong life grounded in partnership, perseverance, and family.
He is survived by his children, Monica Phelps (Bill) of Crow and Roger Johnson (Beth) of Crow; his grandchildren, Ashley Betkijian (Dave) of Shady Spring, Bud Phelps of Beckley, Blaine Johnson (Renee) of Crow, Christopher Phelps of Middletown, PA, and Claire Johnson of Crow; and his great-grandchildren, Hudson Betkijian, Magnolia Fern and Buster Reed Johnson. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews and their children and some that have passed before him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings: Colleen "Mitzi" Johnson, Phillip Johnson, Shirley "Johnnie" (Johnson) Underwood, Betty (Johnson) Bower, and Larry Johnson.
Roger will be remembered for his loyalty, determination, quick wit, quiet generosity, and the comfort of knowing he was someone you could always count on. He will also be remembered for his love of babies and little children which always brought a smile to his face regardless of what he was doing. His legacy lives on through the family and friends he touched throughout his life with love, loyalty and life lessons.
Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate the Life of Roger Johnson on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 1:00 PM, at the Amos E. Quesenberry Peace Chapel of Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley, WV with Pastor Jon Rinker will be officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 AM until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Crow Christian Church (PO Box 714, Beaver, WV 25813) or the Bowers Hospice House of Beckley.
