Roger Keith Smith, 73, of Fairdale, WV, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family, after courageously living with Parkinson's for nine years.

Born December 12, 1952, in Iaeger, WV, he was the son of James W. Smith and Ruby J. (Sloan) Smith. He spent his childhood in the small community of Tamcliff, WV, later moving to Kopperston, WV, in 1969.

Roger volunteered to serve his country in 1970 and spent two tours in Vietnam, a service he was honored to have been a part of. He was proud of his country and supported his fellow veterans with great affection and pride, always greeting any veteran with a warm handshake and a “Welcome home.”

In 1970, he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Phyllis Ruth Clark. After serving his country, they married in 1972 and were blessed with 54 years of marriage, raising two sons, Shawn and Steven. Together they shared many years of love, camping and boating at Summersville Lake, a place they loved to spend time with family. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed going to NASCAR races. He was full of life and laughter, never knew a stranger, and always put his family first. He dedicated his life to providing and caring for his family his love for them was beyond measure.

Roger worked at Eastern Associated and Peabody Coal for 28 years. While working, he also went on to receive two degrees from Marshall University, always striving to provide for his family.

Roger received Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1991. He always had an answer for any question the family had about the Bible. He loved going to church and would testify that he was “one blessed man.” He attended Maysel Community Church before his illness kept him home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruby (Sloan) Smith, and a special uncle, Paul Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Phyllis; sons Shawn (Terri) Smith and Steven (Samantha) Smith; granddaughters Emily (Smith) Acord and husband Zane, and Addilynn Smith; a special uncle, David Smith, and Aunt Gloria; and cousins, family, and friends whose lives he impacted greatly.
