Sergeant Mark Allen Canterbury

Sergeant Mark "Bigun" Allen Canterbury was saluted to his final call of duty by his brother in-law Lieutenant Colonel Charles Lopez on May 19th, 2024, at 1055 hours, at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston WV. Mark was surrounded by family; Mark was embraced by his Heavenly Father as his father, Dayton Canterbury, sang "Sweet Beulah Land."

Mark was preceded in death by his beloved father and best friend, Dayton Earl Canterbury, his grandparents Dayton and Clara Canterbury, and Cecil and Nona Williams. He was also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, John and Christina Abbott, and a special uncle, Benny Williams.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Janie Canterbury, and their children, Mark Canterbury Jr. (and wife Brandi Canterbury) and April Matthews, both whom he was immensely proud of and never failed to take the opportunity to brag on them to whomever would lend an ear. He was a cherished grandfather to D'Amarion Coping and Aleia Matthews, he is now their constant angel sitting on their shoulders at all times. Mark also leaves behind his mother, Mary Canterbury, and three sisters: Becky Cook, Ruth (and husband Charles) Lopez, and Lisa (and husband Tim) Murdock. His brothers-in-law, Kenneth (and wife Kelly) Abbott and Keith (and wife Melissa) Abbott; along with numerous nieces and nephews, who will always fondly remember him as Uncle Mark.

Mark was a proud Army veteran, a dedicated truck driver, a skilled cabinet maker, and later, following in his father's footsteps, a proud West Virginia coal miner.

Mark was a devoted husband to Janie and a hero to his two children, Mark Jr. and April. He was a loyal son to his parents and after his father's death, his mother Mary's keeper, as well as the best big brother in the world to his sisters Becky, Ruth, and Lisa. However; his greatest accomplishment and source of pride and joy was being a Papaw to D'Amarion and Aleia. He was their buddy, babysitter, and best friend.

Those who knew him well will never forget his quick wit, jokes, and the immense love he had for his family. Mark was a big-hearted man with a tender soul, and he will be truly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Mark loved going to Church at Beckley Church of God, (and his church family), going to car shows, and working in the yard, and his biggest source of fun was picking on his sisters, using their heads as a set of drums when they were kids, and their knees as gearshifts, making wise cracks even up to his last days.

Funeral services will be conducted at Beckley Church of God, 2211 South Kanawha St, Beckley WV on Friday May 24th at 11:00 am, with Pastor Harold Newsome officiating. Burial will follow at Williams Cemetery at Maple Fork WV. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 am until service at the church,

Pallbearers will be his nephews and grandson, D'Amarion Coping, Jeremy Richmond, James Sparks, Robert Hollandsworth, James Ferguson, Ryan Lilly, Lance Richmond, Joe Matthews.
