Sherman Lee Shumate

Sherman Lee Shumate, age 87, of Shady Spring, WV went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, WV.

Born on April 11, 1938 in Beckley, he was the son of the late Sherman G. Shumate and Opal L. McKinney Shumate.

Mr. Shumate retired from the US Air Force after 23 years of service. He worked at Grady Whitlock Ford for 3 three years, and retired from the Beckley VA Medical Center in records management and radiology. Mr. Shumate served with  the Gideons for many years.

Mr. Shumate was a member of Clifftop Missionary Baptist Church on Airport Road, Beaver, WV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Hunley; two sisters, Patricia Doleman and Betty Shumate Empson; a brother-in-law Byron Empson.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife Linda Cook Shumate; a daughter Kathy Ridley and husband Tim Uniontown, PA; grandson George Meadows and wife Wendy of Shady Spring; a great granddaughter Peyton Meadows of Shady Spring; two nieces Lisa Davenport and Denise Cheri, both of Virginia.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Amos E. Quesenberry Chapel of Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Shady Spring, WV on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 2:30 PM with Pastor Keith Manning and Rev. Delmas Cox officiating. Burial will follow at the Ashworth Cemetery at Ghent, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 12:30 PM until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.
