Sonny Kenton Summers

Sonny Kenton Summers, age 88, of Maple Fork, WV passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 after a long battle with dementia.

Kenton was born in Roane County, WV and graduated from Walton High School in 1954. He served in the Air National Guard for eight years. Kenton was employed by Bell Lines and Smith's Transfer for thirty-two years. He was a proud member of theTeamsters Union.

He had faith in God and attended and served as a deacon in the Blue Creek Advent Christian Church.

Kenton loved country and bluegrass music. He was a talented fiddle, mandolin and guitar player. He enjoyed picking and grinning, and was an illustrious band member of the Roane County Stump Jumpers.

Kenton is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Phyllis, whom he was married to for sixty-four years; one daughter Kim Summers Ashley and son-in-law Randy Ashley; grandchildren, Tyler Brannon Ashley and Maggie Nicole Ashley; one great grandson, Case Ezra Ashley. He is also survived by brothers-in-law, Scottie and Gregory Johnson; sisters-in-law Annette Cummings McMahan and Sharon Johnson. Nieces, Becky Summers Rogers and Lori Summers Nichols. Kenton also leaves behind his card playing buddies, Gary and Carol Dye.

Kenton is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Thornton Summers and Nellie Taylor Summers; sisters-in-law Linda Summers and Carolyn Sue Johnson White, and brother-in-law, Elton White, brother and best friend, Lewis Summers.  He is also preceded in death by his foster parents, Bill  and Una Henderson, and special cousins Oral Henderson, Thurl Henderson, and Catherine Henderson Brisendine.

The family extends special thanks to Beckley Healthcare Center and Bowers Hospice House.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at noon with Pastor Luke Richmond officiating. Music will be provided by Bobby Taylor.  Burial will follow at the Canterbury -Droddy Cemetery at Walton, WV. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Randy Ashley, Tyler Ashley, Todd Cummings, John Rogers, Jake Nichols and Nick Williams.
