Stephen Matthew Wood Jr.

Stephen Matthew Wood Jr., 98, passed away peacefully at his home in Prosperity, surrounded by his family on Friday, January 3, 2025.

Born in Sprague, WV, on December 25, 1926, he was the son of the late Stephen Wood Sr. and Miranda Sizemore Wood. Stephen proudly served his country in the United States Army.  On July 20, 1959, he married the love of his life, June Williams, at Memorial Baptist Church. He worked for the WV Turnpike Commission,  then worked and later retired from the WV Board of Education. Stephen's life was a testament to his faith and his service to the Lord. He was a long standing member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a Deacon.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son in law, Robert Bair and 11 brothers and sisters.

He will be forever missed by his wife of 65 years, June Williams Wood, three children, Wayne Wood and wife Katherine, Kimberly Wood, and Vicky Bair, a sister Shirley Lafferty, eight grandchildren Susan Wood, Jason Wood, Amy Smedley, Brian Bair, Aaron Bair, Eric Bair, Mirinda Mills, Megan Lafferty, and 15 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Nutter officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, WV. Friends may call one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
