Steve Smith

John Steven Smith, 73, of Stanaford, WV, passed away peacefully at his home, following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

Steve was born and raised in Southern West Virginia where he enjoyed playing music on the guitar, woodworking, hunting, and riding his motorcycle and trike on trips with both family and close friends.

He and his family were stationed in Killeen, Texas while he proudly served his country as a member of the US Army. Upon return to West Virginia, Steve worked for the Universal Corporation, and later owned and operated his own remodeling business in the Beckley area for three decades. As the owner of Steve's Custom Home Improvements, his craftsmanship not only allowed him to bring beauty into people's homes, but fellowship into their hearts.

He was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church, in Stanaford, where he served as a deacon for over four decades, a choir director, and an adult Sunday school teacher.

Steve was a faithful friend to many and never met a stranger he wasn't willing to help. He was a devoted husband and father and is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Janie, his daughter Holly Smith (Dustin), his sisters, Sue Mullins (Tommy) and Christy Lilly (Tom), and his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Smith, and his mother Christine.

Per his wishes, Steve will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2025. Guests may attend visitation at 12:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church, located at 281 Union Hall Road in Stanaford, WV. Pastor Daniel and Pastor Roger Harding will officiate.

Steve fought a long, difficult battle with both cancer and Parkinson's, so in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, The American Cancer Society, the Parkinson's Foundation, or Gideons International.
