William Emory Nessmith passed away at the age of 94 on September 14, 2026, leaving behind a family who loved him dearly and a community that was better because he was in it.

Born on November 1, 1931, to the late Josh T. and Selma Nessmith.

Emory grew up in Statesboro, Georgia, where he graduated from Statesboro High School in 1950. From an early age, it was clear he was gifted athletically - especially in football, where he collected accolades and probably made a few opponents rethink their life choices.

After high school, Emory enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and served as an MP in Sembach and Ramstein, Germany, for three years. He also played running back for an Air Force football team and, true to form, never missed a game. When he returned stateside, he married the love of his life, Betty Veal Nessmith. They shared 68 wonderful years together, proving that love, patience, and a good sense of humor can go a very long way.

Emory worked for and retired from Roadway Express after decades of dedicated service. He also gave generously of his time to his church, was a lifetime member of the Masons, and was the kind of neighbor everyone hopes to have next door - the helpful kind, not the borrow-your-tools-and-never-return-them kind.

He adored his family and especially loved spending time with his five grandchildren, who no doubt kept him young and occasionally tested his patience. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vivan Nessmith; his parents; his sister, Jean N. Rogers; and his brothers, Ben R. Nessmith and Josh T. Nessmith.

He is survived by his beloved wife; daughters, Maria Looney and Joyce Ammons; five grandchildren; and great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.

A private interment will be held at a later date.
