Roger Lee Matherly, Sr., 76, of Flat Top, WV passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Charleston Area Medical Center General Division, after a long illness.

Born on January 1, 1942, at Flat Top, he was the son of the late John and Mary Mansfield Matherly.

Roger retired from Beckley Coal Company in Glen Daniel, WV. He graduated from Spanishburg High School in 1960. Roger was of the Baptist faith and had lived most of his life at Flat Top. He was a member of the UMWA, and enjoyed fishing, working on small engines, family time (Challenger Baseball and Special Olympics).

Roger never met a stranger and was always friendly and out-going (joking) and enjoyed life. He always had his little buddy with him everywhere he went, his beloved son, Joshua. A special thanks goes to his sidekick Carlos Lilly, who has been a tremendous friend to all of us during Roger's illness.

Survivors left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 30 years, Lisa Lilly Matherly; their two sons at home, Joshua and Justin Matherly. Other children include daughter, Lula Matherly Powers and husband Dean; sons, Roger Matherly Jr., and Franklin Matherly and wife Adriana, all of Thomasville, NC; brother, John Matherly and wife Cathy, of Waynesboro, VA; sister, Ellen Scott and husband Bob, of Spring City, TN; sister, Patricia Hall of Princeton, WV; two granddaughters, three step grandchildren, six great grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, one step great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Roger leaves behind his "four legged friends", horses: Winston, Rascal, Princess and Secretariat; dogs: Bella, Momma and Squeaky and cats: Tiger and Abby.

Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 3 PM with Pastor Jack Barber officiating.
